Since coming home to Hong Kong, I have been in quarantine/ self-isolation for quite a few weeks, so yesterday I decided to finally go out for a walk with my sister on the trail near our place.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous and we were really enjoying ourselves. There were trees on either side of the trail, and suddenly as we were walking, a boar emerges from the trees on the right.
I wouldn't say I was scared exactly, but I definitely wouldn't say I was comfortable approaching the boar. But then it was also the first time I've seen a boar this close so I decided to pull out my phone to take a video while it was still far away.
As my sister and I turn to walk in the opposite direction, we see an old lady coming in our direction, and I decided to make a not-so-quiet comment to my sister about how big the boar was. I thought the old lady will hear me and also see the boar and turn back the way she came.
What I did not expect was for her to keep on walking as if everything was perfectly normal, and then pull out some peanuts from her pocket. As the boar approached, this old lady was popping peanuts into her mouth and giving a nonchalant glance towards the boar, whilst me and my sister were retreating awkwardly and trying to take a video backwards. In retrospect, it was quite a funny image.
The boar kept walking down the trail so my sister and I slowly backed down the same way that we came until we reached the opening of the trail, which was by a road. We stood to one side, expecting the boar to be scared of the road and go back into the trees so that we could proceed with our walk.
What I did not expect was for the boar to keep on walking as if everything was perfectly normal, on to the road (there were barely any cars) looking as if it was really enjoying itself.
I guess since I've been in isolation, the world has adopted quite an interesting new daily routine...
